Private Locator Jobs

The Private Locator determines where underground utilities are located. Duties include reading maps and blueprints to determine where utilities are located, marking the location of existing utilities for future reference, and helping professionals such as utility workers, construction workers. Locators may use electronic detection equipment in their work, and they may regularly be exposed to heat, cold, rain and other elements of outdoor weather. The Locator may also have to perform physical activities such as using a shovel to unearth utilities as well. At all times, these professionals must follow safety procedures and laws.

Experience in a similar position is often required or preferred. We offer on-the-job training. The ability to stand and walk for long periods of time, to bend and stoop, and to lift heavy items is essential; it is also sometimes necessary to enter manholes. Since this job requires traveling to service locations, it is important to have a clean driving record and a valid driver’s license as well.

Job Tasks:

Drive company vehicles. Utilizes the provided mapping tools and other location information, along with locating equipment, to locate underground utilities including, but not limited to electric and gas utilities telephone and other communication lines. Indicates utility locations through the utilization of paint, flags, and communicates other relevant information to excavation personnel

Physical Demands:

Drive 50 to 300+ miles daily as required by the assigned geographic locating area
Get in and out of a vehicle 50+ times a day
Stand and walk long distances (1+ miles) over uneven terrain in all weather conditions
Sit for long periods of time while driving
Work outdoors in all weather conditions
